Indications

Pharmacology
Effective against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria; inhibits biosynthesis of cell wall; stable in the presence of gastric acid; rapidly absorbed after oral administration; widely distributed in body tissues and fluids
Dosage
- Adult: 250 mg three times daily, increasing up to 500 mg three times daily for severe infections
- Children: 125 mg three times daily, increasing up to 250 mg three times daily for severe infections
Special Dosage Recommendations
- 3 gm every 12 hours for severe or recurrent purulent respiratory infection
- 1 g three times daily for adult otitis media
- Recommended dose for pneumonia: 500-1000 mg three times daily
- Recommended dose for dental abscess: 3 gm, repeated after 10-12 hours
- Recommended dose for urinary tract infections: 3 gm, repeated after 10-12 hours
- Single dose of 2-3 gm with Probenecid 1 gm for gonorrhoea
Administration
Reconstituted suspension can be administered by adding the required amount of suspension to milk, fruit juice, water; preparations should then be taken immediately
Interaction
Concurrent use with Probenecid may result in increased and prolonged blood levels; may affect gut flora, leading to lower estrogen reabsorption and reduced efficacy of combined oral estrogen/progesterone contraceptives
Contraindications
Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients
Side Effects
- Mild and transient side effects
- May include diarrhoea, indigestion, rash
- Rare reports of pseudo-membranous colitis
Pregnancy & Lactation
Amoxicillin is pregnancy category B; excreted in human milk; caution should be exercised when administered to lactating mother
Precautions & Warnings
Possibility of superinfections with mycotic or bacterial pathogens should be kept in mind during therapy; if superinfections occur, product should be discontinued and appropriate therapy instituted
