Pharmacology
Amoxicillin is a broad spectrum penicillin effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It inhibits cell wall biosynthesis and is stable in gastric acid. It is rapidly absorbed and widely distributed in body tissues and fluids.
Dosage
- Adult dosage: 250 mg three times daily, increasing to 500 mg for severe infections
- Children dosage: 125 mg three times daily, increasing to 250 mg for severe infections
- Recommended dosage for specific conditions like purulent respiratory infection, otitis media, pneumonia, dental abscess, urinary tract infections, and gonorrhoea
Administration
Reconstituted suspension can be administered with milk, fruit juice, or water and should be taken immediately.
Interaction
Concurrent use with Probenecid may result in increased and prolonged blood levels. It may affect gut flora and contraceptive efficacy.
Contraindications
Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients
Side Effects
Mild and transient side effects including diarrhoea, indigestion, occasionally rash, and rarely pseudo-membranous colitis
Pregnancy & Lactation
US FDA pregnancy category B. Excreted in human milk; caution should be exercised during lactation.
Precautions & Warnings
Superinfections with mycotic or bacterial pathogens should be kept in mind. If superinfections occur, Moxico should be discontinued, and appropriate therapy should be instituted.
