Description
Moxin is a broad spectrum penicillin used in the treatment of various infections caused by susceptible microorganisms. It is available in different dosage forms such as tablets, capsules, and injections, and is indicated for conditions including ear, nose and throat infections, lower respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, genito-urinary tract infections, dental abscess, and H. pylori infection and duodenal ulcer disease.
Dosage instructions
Adult: 250 mg-500 mg three times daily; Children: 125 mg-250 mg three times daily. Specific doses for severe or recurrent purulent respiratory infection, otitis media, pneumonia, dental abscess, urinary tract infections, and gonorrhoea. Adjustment required in renal impairment.
Pharmacology
Amoxicillin, the active ingredient in Moxin, is a broad spectrum penicillin effective against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It inhibits the biosynthesis of the bacterial cell wall and is rapidly absorbed after oral administration. It is widely distributed in body tissues and fluids.
Administration instructions
Reconstituted suspension can be administered by adding the required amount of suspension to milk, fruit juice, or water, and should be taken immediately.
Interaction
Concurrent use of Moxin and Probenecid may result in increased and prolonged blood levels of Moxin. Moxin may affect the gut flora, leading to lower estrogen reabsorption and reduced efficacy of combined oral estrogen/progesterone contraceptives.
Contraindications
Amoxicillin is contraindicated in penicillin-hypersensitive patients.
Side effects
Side effects of Moxin are mild and transient and may include diarrhea, indigestion, occasionally rash, and rarely pseudo-membranous colitis.
Pregnancy lactation info
Amoxicillin carries a US FDA pregnancy category of B. Caution should be exercised when administered to lactating mothers due to excretion in human milk.
Precautions warnings
The possibility of superinfections with mycotic or bacterial pathogens should be kept in mind during therapy. If superinfections occur, Moxin should be discontinued and appropriate therapy should be instituted.
Therapeutic class
Broad spectrum penicillins
Reconstitution instructions
Amoxicillin 500 mg Injection should be reconstituted with specified volumes of water for injection for intramuscular and intravenous administration.
