Indications
- Ear, nose and throat infections

Pharmacology
- Broad spectrum penicillin
- Inhibition of biosynthesis of cell wall
- Stable in the presence of gastric acid
- Rapid oral absorption
- Widely distributed in body tissues and fluids
Dosage
- Adult dosage: 250 mg three times daily
- Children dosage: 125 mg three times daily
- Severe or recurrent purulent respiratory infection dosage: 3 gm every 12 hours
- Otitis media dosage: 1 g three times daily for adults and 40 mg/kg body weight daily in 3 divided doses for children
- Pneumonia dosage: 500-1000 mg three times daily
- Dental abscess dosage: 3 gm, repeated after 10-12 hours
- Urinary tract infections dosage: 3 gm, repeated after 10-12 hours
- Gonorrhoea dosage: Single dose of 2-3 gm with Probenecid 1 gm
- Dosage adjustment in renal impairment
Administration
- Reconstituted suspension can be administered with milk, fruit juice, water
Interaction
- Concurrent use with Probenecid may increase and prolong blood levels
- Impact on gut flora, leading to lower estrogen reabsorption and reduced efficacy of combined oral contraceptives
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients

- Rare reports of Pseudo-membranous colitis
Pregnancy & Lactation
- US FDA pregnancy category: B
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Excretion in human milk
- Caution in lactating mothers

- Possible superinfections with mycotic or bacterial pathogens
- Appropriate therapy if superinfections occur

Reconstitution
- Intramuscular reconstitution: Add 2.5 ml water for injection to Amoxycillin 500 mg injection vial
