Description
- Broad spectrum penicillin
- Effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
- Indicated in the treatment of various infections including ear, nose and throat infections, respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, genito-urinary tract infections, venereal disease, dental abscess
- Stable in the presence of gastric acid
- Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients
- Pregnancy category B with caution in lactating mothers
- Storage in a dry place away from light and heat
Dosage
- Adult dosage: 250 mg- 500 mg three times daily
- Children dosage: 125 mg- 250 mg three times daily
- Specific dosages for severe or recurrent purulent respiratory infection, otitis media, pneumonia, dental abscess, urinary tract infections, gonorrhoea
- Dosage adjustment needed in renal impairment
Administration
- Reconstituted suspension can be administered with milk, fruit juice, or water
Interaction
- Concurrent use with Probenecid may increase and prolong blood levels of Pemox
- May affect gut flora and reduce efficacy of combined oral contraceptives
Side Effects
- Mild and transient side effects include diarrhea, indigestion, rash
- Rare reports of pseudo-membranous colitis
Precautions & Warnings
- Possibility of superinfections with mycotic or bacterial pathogens
- Discontinue if superinfections occur
