Description

Indications

Pharmacology
- Broad-spectrum penicillin effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
- Inhibits cell wall biosynthesis
- Stable in gastric acid
- Rapidly absorbed after oral administration
- Widely distributed in body tissues and fluids
Dosage
- Adult dosage: 250 mg three times daily, increasing up to 500 mg three times daily for severe infections
- Children dosage: 125 mg three times daily, increasing up to 250 mg three times daily for severe infections
- Specific recommended doses for various infections and age groups
Administration
- Reconstituted suspension can be administered by adding to milk, fruit juice, or water
Interaction
- Concurrent use with Probenecid may increase and prolong blood levels of Pharmoxyl
- May affect gut flora and reduce efficacy of combined oral contraceptives
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients
Side Effects
- Mild and transient side effects including diarrhea, indigestion, and rash
- Rare reports of pseudo-membranous colitis
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Category B drug (US FDA)
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Excreted in human milk, caution advised during lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Possibility of superinfections with mycotic or bacterial pathogens
- Discontinue if superinfections occur and institute appropriate therapy
