Indications

  • Treatment of infections due to susceptible ß-lactamase negative strains of microorganisms

  • Dental abscess therapy
  • Triple therapy for H. pylori infection
  • Reduction of duodenal ulcer recurrence risk

Pharmacology

  • Amoxicillin is a broad spectrum penicillin
  • Effective against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
  • Inhibition of biosynthesis of cell wall
  • Stable in the presence of gastric acid
  • Rapid absorption after oral administration
  • Widely distributed in body tissues and fluids

Dosage

  • Adult dosage: 250 mg-500 mg three times daily
  • Children dosage: 125 mg-250 mg three times daily
  • Specific doses for purulent respiratory infection, otitis media, pneumonia, dental abscess, urinary tract infections, and gonorrhea
  • Adjustment in renal impairment

Administration

  • Reconstituted suspension can be administered by adding to milk, fruit juice, water
  • Immediate consumption after adding to the liquid

Interaction

  • Concurrent use with Probenecid may increase blood levels
  • Impact on gut flora affecting estrogen reabsorption
  • Reduced efficacy of combined oral contraceptives

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients
