Indications

Pharmacology
Amoxicillin is a broad spectrum penicillin effective against a wide range of bacteria. It inhibits cell wall biosynthesis, is stable in gastric acid, and rapidly absorbed after oral administration.
Dosage
- Adult: 250 mg three times daily, increasing up to 500 mg three times daily for severe infections
- Children: 125 mg three times daily, increasing up to 250 mg three times daily for severe infections
Administration
Reconstituted suspension can be mixed with milk, fruit juice, or water and should be taken immediately.
Interaction
Concurrent use with Probenecid may increase and prolong blood levels. Can affect gut flora resulting in reduced efficacy of oral contraceptives.
Contraindications
Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients
Side Effects
Mild and transient side effects include diarrhoea, indigestion, occasionally rash. Pseudo-membranous colitis reported rarely.
Pregnancy & Lactation
US FDA pregnancy category B. Caution advised during lactation.
Precautions & Warnings
Superinfections with mycotic or bacterial pathogens should be considered. Discontinue if superinfections occur.
