Pharmacology

Broad spectrum penicillin effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, inhibits cell wall biosynthesis, stable in gastric acid, rapidly absorbed

Dosage

Adult: 250 mg three times daily, increasing to 500 mg three times daily for severe infections
Children: 125 mg three times daily, increasing to 250 mg three times daily for severe infections
Other:
- Higher doses for severe or recurrent purulent respiratory infection, otitis media, pneumonia, dental abscess, urinary tract infections, and gonorrhea
- Dose adjustment needed in renal impairment

Administration

Reconstituted suspension can be administered with milk, fruit juice, water

Interaction

Concurrent use with Probenecid may increase and prolong blood levels, affect gut flora leading to lower estrogen reabsorption

Contraindications

Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients

US FDA pregnancy category B, excreted in human milk, caution advised during lactation

Precautions & Warnings

Superinfections with mycotic or bacterial pathogens should be considered, discontinue if superinfections occur
