Indications
- Treatment of ear, nose and throat infections
- Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections
- Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections
- Treatment of genito-urinary tract infections
- Treatment of venereal disease (e.g. acute uncomplicated gonorrhoea)
- Treatment of dental abscess
- Triple therapy for H. pylori infection and duodenal ulcer disease
Pharmacology
- Broad spectrum penicillin
- Effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
- Inhibition of cell wall biosynthesis
- Stable in the presence of gastric acid
- Rapid absorption after oral administration
- Widely distributed in body tissues and fluids
Dosage
- Adult dosage: 250 mg three times daily, increasing up to 500 mg three times daily for severe infections
- Children dosage: 125 mg three times daily, increasing up to 250 mg three times daily for severe infections
- Specific dosages for severe or recurrent purulent respiratory infection, otitis media, pneumonia, dental abscess, urinary tract infections, and gonorrhoea
- Adjustment needed for renal impairment
Administration
- Reconstituted suspension administration with milk, fruit juice, or water
Interaction
- Concurrent use of Tymox and Probenecid may result in increased and prolonged blood levels
- Effect on gut flora leading to lower estrogen reabsorption and reduced efficacy of combined oral contraceptives
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients
Side Effects
- Mild and transient side effects such as diarrhea, indigestion, rash
- Rare cases of pseudo-membranous colitis reported
Pregnancy & Lactation
- US FDA pregnancy category B
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Caution in lactating mothers due to excretion in human milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Possible superinfections with mycotic or bacterial pathogens
- Discontinue if superinfections occur and institute appropriate therapy
