Description
- Xtramox is an antibiotic indicated in the treatment of infections due to susceptible β-lactamase negative strains of microorganisms. It is effective for treating a wide range of infections such as ear, nose, and throat infections, lower respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, genito-urinary tract infections, venereal disease, dental abscess, H. pylori infection, and duodenal ulcer disease.

Dosage
- Adult Dosage: 250 mg three times daily, increasing up to 500 mg three times daily for severe infections
- Children Dosage: 125 mg three times daily, increasing up to 250 mg three times daily for severe infections
- Special Dosage for Certain Infections like Otitis Media, Pneumonia, Dental Abscess, Urinary Tract Infections, Gonorrhoea
Administration
- Reconstituted suspension can be administered by adding the required amount of suspension to milk, fruit juice, or water. These preparations should then be taken immediately.
Interaction
- Concurrent use of Xtramox and Probenecid may result in increased and prolonged blood levels of Xtramox
- Xtramox may affect gut flora, leading to lower estrogen reabsorption and reduced efficacy of combined oral estrogen/progesterone contraceptives
Contraindications
- Amoxicillin is contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients
Side Effects
- Mild and Transient Side Effects like Diarrhoea, Indigestion, Rash
- Rare cases of Pseudo-membranous Colitis reported
Pregnancy & Lactation
- US FDA Pregnancy Category B
- Caution advised during lactation as Amoxicillin is excreted in human milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Possibility of superinfections with mycotic or bacterial pathogens should be kept in mind during therapy. If superinfections occur, Xtramox should be discontinued and appropriate therapy should be instituted.
