Indications
- Treatment of infections caused by mecillinam-sensitive organisms
- Acute cystitis
- Complicated urinary tract infections
- Salmonellosis
- Shigellosis
- Enteropathic E. coli diarrhoea
- Gram-negative septicaemia
- Biliary infections
Pharmacology
- Belongs to the amdinopenicillin class of penicillin
- Bactericidal action by interfering with bacterial cell wall synthesis
- Very active against Enterobacteriaceae
- Poor activity against Gram-positive organisms
Dosage
- Usual adult dose of 1-2 tablets 3 times daily
- Specific dosages for acute uncomplicated cystitis, chronic or recurrent bacteriurea, salmonellosis, and prophylactic treatment of recurrent urinary tract infections
- Dosage for children based on weight and condition being treated
Administration
- Tablet should be taken with at least 50-100 ml fluid
- Bioavailability is unaffected by simultaneous food intake
Contraindications
- Patients with known hypersensitivity to penicillins and cephalosporins should be excluded from treatment
Side Effects
- Generally well tolerated
- May cause upper gastrointestinal disturbances, skin rashes, but no evidence of hepato-, nephro-, or ototoxicity
- Anaphylaxis cannot be entirely excluded
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use in pregnancy should be avoided
- Not excreted into the milk of lactating mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Raised blood levels may occur with impaired renal function
Use in Special Populations
- Dosage adjustment based on renal function
- Avoid use in infants under 3 months of age
Overdose Effects
- Excessive doses may cause nausea, vomiting, and gastritis
- Treatment should be restricted to symptomatic and supportive measures
