Indications

Pharmacology
- Semisynthetic analogue of Cephalosporin C
- Interferes in the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall
- Active by mouth
Dosage & Administration
- Usual adult dose of 250 mg to 500 mg every 6 hours
- Maximum children's dosage of 4 g daily
- Administered every 12 hours for certain infections
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin group of antibiotics
Side Effects
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Abdominal discomfort
- Pseudomembranous colitis
- Skin rash
- Superinfection with resistant microorganisms
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category B
- May be used during pregnancy when essential
- Found in the milk of nursing mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with renal impairment
- May give false positive reaction for glucose in urine
- Positive results to Coombs’ test reported
