Indications
- Respiratory tract infections

Pharmacology
- Semisynthetic analogue of Cephalosporin C
- Interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis
- Active by mouth
Dosage & Administration
- Adult:
- Usual dose of 250 mg to 500 mg every 6 hours
- Increased dose of 3 g to 6 g daily for severe infections
- Children:
- Dosage range of 25-100 mg/kg/day
- Total daily dose may be divided and administered every 12 hours
Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to the cephalosporin group of antibiotics

- Abdominal discomfort
- Pseudomembranous colitis symptoms
- Skin rash
- Angioedema
- Rise in serum aminotransferases
- Eosinophilia
- Neutropenia
- Superinfection with resistant microorganisms
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Caution should be taken when administered to nursing mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with renal impairment
- False positive reaction for glucose with copper reduction reagent in urine
- Positive results to Coombs’ test have been reported
- Use during pregnancy when essential
- Caution when administered to nursing mothers
