Pharmacology

Semisynthetic analogue of Cephalosporin C
Interferes in the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall
Inhibits transpeptidase enzyme
First generation cephalosporin
Active by mouth

Dosage & Administration

Usual adult dose of 250 mg to 500 mg every 6 hours
Maximum adult dose of 3 g to 6 g daily for severe infections
Children's weight recommended dose based on kg
Total daily dose divided for streptococcal pharyngitis and otitis media
Therapeutic dosage for β haemolytic streptococcal infections for at least 10 days

Contraindications

Known hypersensitivity to the cephalosporin group of antibiotics

Cefalexin may be used during pregnancy when essential

Given with caution in patients with renal impairment
May give a false positive reaction for glucose in urine
Positive results to Coombs’ test reported
No evidence of teratogenicity in animal tests
