Indications

Respiratory tract infections
Genito-urinary tract infections
Skin and soft tissue infections

Pharmacology

Kills bacteria by interfering in the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall
Weakens the bacterial cell wall, causing swelling and rupture
Active by mouth

Dosage & Administration

Usual adult dose: 250 mg to 500 mg every 6 hours
Usual child dose range: 25-100 mg/kg/day
Maximum daily child dose: 4 g
Dose administered every 12 hours for certain infections

Contraindications

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to the cephalosporin group of antibiotics

Given with caution in patients with renal impairment
Safe dosage may be lower in patients with renal impairment
Urine may give false positive reaction for glucose with copper reduction reagent
Positive result to Coombs’ test reported
