Indications
- Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections
- Treatment of urinary tract infections
- Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections
Description
- Acid-stable and semi-synthetic oral cephalosporin
- Rapidly absorbed after oral administration
Pharmacology
- Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins
- Inhibits the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis
- Arrests cell wall assembly resulting in bacterial cell death
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage for pharyngitis and tonsillitis: 1g per day in divided doses
- Adult dosage for urinary tract infections: 1-2g per day in divided doses
- Adult dosage for skin and skin structure infections: 1g per day in divided doses
- Children dosage: 30mg/kg daily in divided doses every 12 hours
- May be taken with or without meals
- Administration with food may diminish potential gastrointestinal complaints
Interaction
- No significant drug interaction with other drugs
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Cefadroxil or any of its ingredients
Side Effects
- Most commonly reported side effects are gastrointestinal disturbances
- Most commonly reported side effects are hypersensitivity phenomena
Pregnancy & Lactation
- US FDA pregnancy category B
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Excreted in human milk
- Caution should be exercised when administered during lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Use may cause pseudomembranous colitis
- Caution should be taken during diagnosis in patients who develop diarrhea in association with therapy
