Indications

  • Upper respiratory tract infections

Description

  • Acid-stable
  • Semi-synthetic oral cephalosporin
  • Rapidly absorbed after oral administration
  • Maintains urine concentration above MIC of susceptible urinary pathogens

Pharmacology

  • Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis
  • Binds to penicillin-binding proteins
  • Arrests cell wall assembly resulting in bacterial cell death

Dosage & Administration

  • Adult dosage: 1-2 g per day in one or two divided doses
  • Children dosage: 30 mg/kg daily in divided doses every 12 hours
  • May be taken with or without meals
  • Administration with food may diminish potential gastrointestinal complaints

  • No significant drug interactions

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Cefadroxil or any of its ingredients

Side Effects

  • Most commonly reported side effects are gastrointestinal disturbances and hypersensitivity phenomena

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • US FDA pregnancy category: B
  • Should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed
  • Excreted in human milk
  • Caution should be exercised during lactation

Precautions & Warnings

  • May cause pseudomembranous colitis
  • Caution should be taken during diagnosis in patients who develop diarrhea
