Indications
- Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections
- Treatment of urinary tract infections
- Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections
Description
- Semi-synthetic oral cephalosporin
- Rapidly absorbed after oral administration
- Maintains urine concentration well above MIC of susceptible urinary pathogens
Pharmacology
- Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis
- Binds to penicillin-binding proteins
- Inhibits final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis
- Arrests cell wall assembly resulting in bacterial cell death
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: 1 g per day in one or two divided doses for specific infections
- Children dosage: 30 mg/kg daily in divided doses every 12 hours
- May be taken with or without meals
Interaction
- No significant drug interaction with other drugs
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Cefadroxil or any of its ingredients
Side Effects
- Commonly reported side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances and hypersensitivity phenomena
Pregnancy & Lactation
- US FDA pregnancy category B
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Excreted in human milk, caution during lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- May cause pseudomembranous colitis, caution during diagnosis in patients with diarrhea
