Description
Abac is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by sensitive Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It is a semisynthetic broad spectrum bactericidal antibiotic, active against infections caused by both gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms. Cephradine is the main component, and it works by inhibiting the cross-linking process in the cell wall of bacteria, leading to cell lysis. The medicine is available in oral and injectable forms, with specific dosages for adults, children, and the elderly.

Pharmacology
Semisynthetic broad spectrum bactericidal antibiotic active against both gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms. Inhibits the cross-linking process in bacteria cell walls.
Dosage & Administration
- Oral Administration:
- Adults:
- Urinary tract infections: 500mg four times daily or 1g twice daily
- Respiratory tract infections: 250 to 500mg four times daily or 500mg to 1g twice daily
- Skin and soft tissue infections: 250 to 500mg four times daily or 500mg to 1g twice daily
- Children:
- Total daily dose of 25 to 50mg/kg given in two or four equally divided doses
- Otitis media: Total daily dose of 75 to 100mg/kg given in divided doses 6 to 12 hourly
- Elderly: The normal adult dose is appropriate. Patients with impaired renal or hepatic function should be monitored during treatment.
- Adults:
- Injectable Administration:
- Adults: 2-4 gm daily in four equally divided doses up to 8 gm daily. For prophylaxis, a single preoperative dose of 1-2 gm intramuscularly or intravenously is given.
- Children: The dose is 50-100 mg/kg daily in four equally divided doses, up to 300 mg/kg daily in severe infection.
Interactions
- Concomitant use of nephrotoxic drugs may increase the risk of kidney damage
- Diuretics and probenecid enhance the possibility of renal toxicity
Contraindications
Should not be used in patients with known or suspected hypersensitivity to cephalosporins

Pregnancy & Lactation
Safety in pregnancy has not been established. Excreted in breast milk and should be used with caution in lactating mothers.
Precautions & Warnings
- Prolonged use may result in the development of superinfection due to the emergence of resistant organisms
- Should be administered with care to patients hypersensitive to penicillins
- May cause a false positive urine glucose result in testing
- Dosage adjustment necessary in renal impairment
- Contains lactose; patients with rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance should not take this medicine
Use in Special Populations
- Renal Impairment: Specific recommended doses based on creatinine clearance
- Additional Information: Regardless of patient age or weight, higher doses may be required for chronic or severe infections.
Overdose Effects
Non-specific symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Treatment is mainly supportive, and gastric lavage may be necessary if a large amount has been ingested.

Storage Conditions
Suspension should be freshly prepared and used within specified timeframes. Injection solutions should be used within 2 hours when kept at room temperature.
