Indications
- Treatment of infections caused by sensitive Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
- Upper respiratory tract infections
- Lower respiratory tract infections
- Urinary tract infections
- Skin and soft tissue infections
Pharmacology
- Semisynthetic broad spectrum bactericidal antibiotic
- Active against both gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
- Inhibits cross-linking process of cell wall
Dosage & Administration
- For oral administration in adults and children
- For injectable administration in adults and children
- Dosage adjustment in renal impairment
- Maximum daily dosage: 4 gm
Interaction
- Concomitant use of nephrotoxic drugs may increase the risk of kidney damage
- Diuretics and probenecid can enhance the possibility of renal toxicity
Contraindications
- Not to be used in patients with known or suspected hypersensitivity to cephalosporins

- Rare effects like glossitis, heartburn, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, etc.

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safety in pregnancy not established
- Excreted in breast milk
- Caution in lactating mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Prolonged use may result in the development of superinfection
- Administered with care to patients hypersensitive to penicillins
- May cause a false positive urine glucose result
- Dosage adjustment necessary in renal impairment
- Contains lactose
- Not recommended for patients with rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance
Use in Special Populations
- Doses recommended for patients not on haemodialysis and on chronic, intermittent haemodialysis
- Higher doses may be required for chronic or severe infections
- Regular bacteriological and clinical monitoring required
Overdose Effects
- Non-specific symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and gastric upsets
- Treatment is mainly supportive
- Gastric lavage may be necessary if large amount has been ingested

Storage Conditions
- Suspension should be freshly prepared
- Reconstituted Suspension should be used within 7-14 days based on storage temperature
- Injection solutions should be used within 2 hours at room temperature
- Solutions retain potency for 12 hours at 5°C
