Description

Dimensions
- For injectable administration: 2-4 gm daily in four equally divided doses, up to 8 gm daily
- Maximum daily dosage for children: 4 gm
- Dosage adjustment necessary in renal impairment

Pharmacology
- Active against infections caused by both gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
- Sensitive to both penicillinase producing and nonproducing staphylococci
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage for urinary tract infections: 500mg four times daily or 1g twice daily
- Children maximum daily dosage: 4 gm
- Dosage adjustment necessary in renal impairment
- For injectable administration: usual dose is 2-4 gm daily in four equally divided doses
Interaction
- Concomitant use of nephrotoxic drugs such as aminoglycosides may increase risk of kidney damage
Contraindications
- Should not be used in patients with known or suspected hypersensitivity to cephalosporins
Side Effects
- Limited to gastro-intestinal disturbances and hypersensitivity phenomena
- Skin reactions occasionally reported
- Rare effects include glossitis, heartburn, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, etc.
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safety in pregnancy not established
- Excreted in breast milk, caution in lactating mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Prolonged use may result in superinfection
- Administered with care to patients hypersensitive to penicillins
Use in Special Populations
- Recommended doses for patients with renal impairment
- Higher doses may be required for chronic or severe infections
Overdose Effects
- Non-specific symptoms including nausea, vomiting, and gastric upsets
