Description

  • Ancef is a broad-spectrum bactericidal antibiotic used to treat infections caused by sensitive Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

Indications

  • Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections like sinusitis, pharyngitis, and tonsillitis
  • Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections including bronchitis and pneumonia
  • Treatment of urinary tract infections like cystitis and pyelonephritis
  • Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections such as abscess and cellulitis

Pharmacology

  • Cephradine is a semisynthetic broad-spectrum bactericidal antibiotic
  • Active against both gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
  • Inhibits cross-linking process in the cell wall of sensitive organisms resulting in lysis of bacteria

DosageAndAdministration

  • Oral administration for adults with urinary tract infections: 500mg four times daily or 1g twice daily
  • Injectable administration for adults: 2-4 gm daily in four equally divided doses up to 8 gm daily
  • Dosage adjustment necessary in renal impairment

Interaction

  • Concomitant use of nephrotoxic drugs may increase the risk of kidney damage
  • Diuretics and probenecid enhance the possibility of renal toxicity

Contraindications

  • Not to be used in patients with known or suspected hypersensitivity to cephalosporins
