Description
- Ancef is a broad-spectrum bactericidal antibiotic used to treat infections caused by sensitive Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
- Cephradine is the active ingredient with a main site of action on the cell wall of bacteria.
Indications
- Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections like sinusitis, pharyngitis, and tonsillitis
- Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections including bronchitis and pneumonia
- Treatment of urinary tract infections like cystitis and pyelonephritis
- Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections such as abscess and cellulitis
Pharmacology
- Cephradine is a semisynthetic broad-spectrum bactericidal antibiotic
- Active against both gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
- Inhibits cross-linking process in the cell wall of sensitive organisms resulting in lysis of bacteria
DosageAndAdministration
- Oral administration for adults with urinary tract infections: 500mg four times daily or 1g twice daily
- Injectable administration for adults: 2-4 gm daily in four equally divided doses up to 8 gm daily
- Dosage adjustment necessary in renal impairment
Interaction
- Concomitant use of nephrotoxic drugs may increase the risk of kidney damage
- Diuretics and probenecid enhance the possibility of renal toxicity
Contraindications
- Not to be used in patients with known or suspected hypersensitivity to cephalosporins

- Limited to gastrointestinal disturbances and hypersensitivity phenomena
- Potential rare effects including blood disorders, immune system disorders, psychiatric disorders, and renal and urinary disorders
