Indications
- Treatment of infections caused by sensitive Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
- Upper respiratory tract infections: sinusitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, laryngo-tracheo bronchitis, otitis media
- Lower respiratory tract infections: bronchitis, lobar pneumonia, bronchopneumonia
- Urinary tract infections: cystitis, urethritis, pyelonephritis
- Skin and soft tissue infections: abscess, cellulitis, furunculosis, impetigo
Pharmacology
- Semisynthetic broad spectrum bactericidal antibiotic
- Active against gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
- Inhibits cross-linking process in bacteria cell wall
- Main site of action is the cell wall of bacteria
Dosage & Administration
- Oral administration for adults: 500mg-1g dosage
- Oral administration for children: 25-50mg/kg total daily dose
- Injectable administration for adults: 2-4g daily dosage
- Injectable administration for children: 50-100mg/kg daily dosage
Interaction
- Concomitant use of nephrotoxic drugs may increase risk of kidney damage
- Diuretics and probenecid enhance possibility of renal toxicity
Contraindications
- Not to be used in patients with known or suspected hypersensitivity to cephalosporins
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal disturbances
- Hypersensitivity phenomena
- Skin reactions
- Rare: Glossitis, heartburn, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea
- Rare: Fever, anaemia, liver enzyme disturbances, interstitial nephritis
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safety in pregnancy not established
- Excreted in breast milk, caution in lactating mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Prolonged use may result in development of superinfection
- Administer with care to patients hypersensitive to penicillins
- May cause a positive result in Coombs’ testing
Use in Special Populations
- Recommended doses for renal impairment
- Higher doses may be required for chronic or severe infections
- Regular bacteriological and clinical monitoring required
Overdose Effects
- Non-specific symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, gastric upsets

Storage Conditions
- Freshly prepared suspension
- Reconstituted suspension should be used within 7-14 days
- Injection solutions should be used within 2 hours - 12 hours
- Solutions may vary in color, but potency is retained
