Indications
- Treats infections caused by sensitive Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
- Effective for upper respiratory tract infections like sinusitis, pharyngitis, and laryngo-tracheo bronchitis
- Suitable for lower respiratory tract infections like bronchitis and lobar pneumonia
- Recommended for urinary tract infections including cystitis and pyelonephritis
- Used for skin and soft tissue infections like abscess and cellulitis
Pharmacology
- Broad spectrum bactericidal antibiotic
- Active against both gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
- Inhibits cross-linking process in the cell wall of bacteria
Dosage & Administration
- Oral administration for adults and children
- Injectable administration for adults and children
- Special dosage adjustments for elderly and patients with renal or hepatic function impairment
Interactions
- Increased risk of kidney damage when used with nephrotoxic drugs
- Enhanced possibility of renal toxicity with diuretics and probenecid
Contraindications
- Not to be used in patients with known or suspected hypersensitivity to cephalosporins
Side Effects
- Gastro-intestinal disturbances
- Hypersensitivity phenomena
- Skin reactions like rashes and urticaria
- Rare effects include glossitis, heartburn, dizziness, and nausea
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safety in pregnancy not established
- Excreted in breast milk, caution advised for lactating mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Prolonged use may result in superinfection
- Administer with care to patients hypersensitive to penicillins
- May cause false positive urine glucose result with certain tests
- Dosage adjustment necessary in renal impairment
- Contains lactose, not suitable for patients with specific hereditary problems
Use in Special Populations
- Recommended doses for patients with renal impairment not on haemodialysis
- Recommendations for patients on chronic, intermittent haemodialysis
Overdose Effects
- Non-specific symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea
- Supportive treatment required, including gastric lavage for large ingestions

Storage Conditions
- Suspension should be freshly prepared
- Reconstituted suspension should be used within 7-14 days depending on storage temperature
- Injection solutions should be used within 2 hours at room temperature
- Do not use later than the date of expiry
