Indications
- Treatment of infections caused by sensitive Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
- Upper respiratory tract infections (sinusitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, laryngo-tracheo bronchitis, otitis media)
- Lower respiratory tract infections (bronchitis, lobar pneumonia, bronchopneumonia)
- Urinary tract infections (cystitis, urethritis, pyelonephritis)
- Skin and soft tissue infections (abscess, cellulitis, furunculosis, impetigo)
Pharmacology
- Semisynthetic broad spectrum bactericidal antibiotic
- Active against gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
- Inhibits cross-linking process in bacterial cell wall
Dosage and Administration
- Oral administration for adults and children
- Injectable administration for adults and children
- Dosage adjustment in renal impairment
- Maximum daily dosage: 4 gm
Interactions
- Nephrotoxic drugs may increase the risk of kidney damage
- Diuretics and probenecid enhance renal toxicity
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins
Side Effects
- Gastro-intestinal disturbances
- Hypersensitivity phenomena
- Skin reactions
- Glossitis, heartburn, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, vaginitis, candida overgrowth
- Rare blood disorders, immune system disorders, psychiatric disorders, nervous system disorders, hepatobiliary disorders, renal and urinary disorders
- Elevation of blood urea nitrogen, serum creatinine, liver enzymes
Pregnancy and Lactation
- Teratogenicity not demonstrated in animal studies
- Caution advised for lactating mothers
- Patients cautioned about operating hazardous machinery
Precautions and Warnings
- Prolonged use may result in superinfection
- Care in patients hypersensitive to penicillins
- Potential positive result in Coombs’ testing
- May cause a false positive urine glucose result with certain testing methods
- Dosage adjustment necessary in renal impairment
- Contains lactose, not suitable for certain patients
Use in Special Populations
- Recommended doses for patients with renal impairment and on haemodialysis
- Higher doses may be required for chronic or severe infections
- Regular bacteriological and clinical monitoring for urinary tract infections
- Paediatric dosages should not exceed those specified for adults
Overdose Effects
- Non-specific symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and gastric upsets
- Supportive treatment advised
- Gastric lavage may be necessary in case of large ingestion

- Suspension should be freshly prepared
- Reconstituted Suspension should be used within designated timeframes
- Injection solutions retain potency for specific durations
