Medicine Details

Indications

  • Treatment of infections caused by sensitive Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
  • Upper respiratory tract infections
  • Lower respiratory tract infections
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Skin and soft tissue infections

Pharmacology

  • Semisynthetic broad spectrum bactericidal antibiotic
  • Active against both gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
  • Main site of action is the cell wall of bacteria

Dosage & Administration

  • Oral administration for adults and children
  • Injectable administration for adults and children
  • Dosage adjustment for elderly and patients with impaired renal or hepatic function
  • Maximum daily dosage: 4 gm

Interaction

  • Concomitant use of nephrotoxic drugs may increase risk of kidney damage
  • Diuretics and probenecid enhance the possibility of renal toxicity

Contraindications

  • Not to be used in patients with known or suspected hypersensitivity to cephalosporins

Side Effects

  • Limited to gastro-intestinal disturbances and hypersensitivity phenomena
  • Glossitis, heartburn, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, skin reactions, urticaria, joint pains, oedema
  • Blood disorders, fever, confusion, hyperactivity, liver enzyme disturbances, reversible interstitial nephritis

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Safety in pregnancy not established
  • Excreted in breast milk
  • Caution in lactating mothers

Precautions & Warnings

  • Prolonged use may result in superinfection
  • Administer with care to patients hypersensitive to penicillins
  • May cause false positive urine glucose result
  • Dosage adjustment necessary in renal impairment
  • Contains lactose - caution for patients with rare hereditary problems

Use in Special Populations

  • Doses recommended for patients with renal impairment
  • Additional information for all patients, regardless of age or weight
  • Higher doses may be required for chronic or severe infections
  • Treatment duration for certain infections
  • Regular bacteriological and clinical monitoring for urinary tract infections

Overdose Effects

  • Non-specific symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
  • Supportive treatment required
  • Gastric lavage necessary for large ingestions

Storage Conditions

  • Freshly prepared suspension
  • Reconstituted suspension should be used within 7-14 days
  • Injection solutions should be used within 2 hours
  • Solutions retain potency for 12 hours when stored at 5°C
  • Do not use later than the date of expiry
