Medicine Details

Indications

  • Treatment of infections caused by sensitive Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
  • Upper respiratory tract infections
  • Lower respiratory tract infections
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Skin and soft tissue infections

Pharmacology

  • Semisynthetic broad spectrum bactericidal antibiotic
  • Active against both gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
  • Inhibits cross-linking process in cell wall of bacteria
  • Main site of action is the cell wall of bacteria

Dosage & Administration

  • Oral administration for adults and children
  • Dosage ranges for urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections
  • Injectable administration for adults and children
  • Dosage ranges for prophylaxis and severe infection

Interaction

  • Increased risk of kidney damage with concomitant use of nephrotoxic drugs
  • Enhanced possibility of renal toxicity with diuretics and probenecid

Contraindications

  • Not for use in patients with known or suspected hypersensitivity to cephalosporins

Side Effects

  • Limited to gastro-intestinal disturbances and hypersensitivity phenomena
  • Occasional skin reactions
  • Possible blood and lymphatic system disorders, immune system disorders, psychiatric disorders, nervous system disorders, hepatobiliary disorders, renal and urinary disorders
  • Potential elevation of blood urea nitrogen, serum creatinine, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, total bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Animal studies have not demonstrated teratogenicity
  • Excreted in breast milk
  • Caution advised in lactating mothers

Precautions & Warnings

  • Prolonged use may result in the development of superinfection
  • Administer with care to patients hypersensitive to penicillins
  • May cause false positive urine glucose result
  • Dosage adjustment necessary in renal impairment
  • Contains lactose; caution for patients with rare hereditary problems
  • Dosage recommendations for patients with renal impairment

Use in Special Populations

  • Doses recommended for patients not on haemodialysis
  • Doses recommended for patients on chronic, intermittent haemodialysis
  • Higher doses may be required for chronic or severe infections
  • Regular bacteriological and clinical monitoring required for chronic urinary tract infections
  • Paediatric dosages should not exceed those for adults

Overdose Effects

  • Non-specific symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, gastric upsets
  • Supportive treatment required
  • Gastric lavage necessary for large ingestions

  • Cefasia DS Suspension should be freshly prepared
  • Reconstituted Suspension should be used within specified time frames
  • Injection solutions should be used within specified time frames
  • Reconstituted solutions may vary in colour without affecting potency
