Medicine Details

Indications

  • Treatment of infections caused by sensitive Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
  • Upper respiratory tract infections: sinusitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, laryngo-tracheo bronchitis, otitis media
  • Lower respiratory tract infections: bronchitis (acute and chronic), lobar pneumonia, bronchopneumonia
  • Urinary tract infections: cystitis, urethritis, pyelonephritis
  • Skin and soft tissue infections: abscess, cellulitis, furunculosis, impetigo

Pharmacology

  • Broad-spectrum bactericidal antibiotic
  • Active against both gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
  • Inhibits cross-linking process in cell wall of bacteria

Dosage & Administration

  • For oral administration in adults and children
  • For injectable administration in adults and children
  • Dosage adjustment in renal impairment
  • Maximum daily dosage: 4 gm

Interaction

  • Concomitant use of nephrotoxic drugs such as aminoglycosides may increase risk of kidney damage
  • Diuretics and probenecid enhance possibility of renal toxicity

Contraindications

  • Not to be used in patients with known or suspected hypersensitivity to cephalosporins

Precautions & Warnings

  • Prolonged use may result in the development of superinfection
  • Administered with care to patients hypersensitive to penicillins
  • May cause a false positive urine glucose result when certain solutions or tablets are used in testing
  • Lactose content - caution in patients with rare hereditary problems

  • Recommended doses for patients with renal impairment
  • Additional information for all patients
  • Paediatric dosages should not exceed those specified for adults

Overdose Effects

  • Non-specific symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, gastric upsets

Storage Conditions

  • Cefracef Suspension should be freshly prepared
  • Reconstituted Suspension should be used within 7-14 days
  • Injection solutions should be used within 2-12 hours depending on storage temperature
  • Do not use later than the date of expiry
