Indications
- Treatment of infections caused by sensitive Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
- Upper respiratory tract infections: sinusitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, laryngo-tracheo bronchitis, otitis media
- Lower respiratory tract infections: bronchitis, lobar pneumonia, bronchopneumonia
- Urinary tract infections: cystitis, urethritis, pyelonephritis
- Skin and soft tissue infections: abscess, cellulitis, furunculosis, impetigo
Pharmacology
- Semisynthetic broad spectrum bactericidal antibiotic
- Active against gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
- Inhibition of cross-linking process in the bacterial cell wall
- Susceptibility of both penicillinase producing and nonproducing staphylococci to Cephradine
Dosage & Administration
- For oral administration in adults and children
- Injectable administration for adults and children
- Dosage adjustment in renal or hepatic function impairment
Interaction
- Risk of kidney damage with concomitant use of nephrotoxic drugs
- Enhanced renal toxicity with diuretics and probenecid
Contraindications
- Not to be used in patients with known or suspected hypersensitivity to cephalosporins
Side Effects
- Gastro-intestinal disturbances
- Hypersensitivity phenomena
- Rare occurrences of glossitis, heartburn, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, skin reactions, joint pains, oedema
- Rare blood disorders, immune system disorders, psychiatric disorders, nervous system disorders, hepatic disorders, renal disorders
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Animal studies have not demonstrated teratogenicity
- Excretion in breast milk and caution during lactation
- Caution about operating hazardous machinery due to dizziness
Precautions & Warnings
- Risk of developing superinfection with prolonged use
- Administer with care to patients hypersensitive to penicillins
- Potential positive result in Coombs’ testing
- Potential for false positive urine glucose result, necessitating enzyme-based tests
- Dose adjustment in renal impairment
- Contains lactose, not for patients with specific hereditary problems
Use in Special Populations
- Recommended dosage adjustments in renal impairment
- Higher doses for chronic or severe infections
- Continued treatment for at least 2 to 3 days after symptoms have resolved
- Regular bacteriological and clinical monitoring for urinary tract infections
- Caution in prescribing pediatric dosages exceeding those for adults
Overdose Effects
- Non-specific symptoms of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and gastric upsets
- Supportive treatment, including gastric lavage if necessary

- Reconstituted suspension should be used within specific timeframes
