Description
Cephid is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by sensitive Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It is a semisynthetic broad spectrum bactericidal antibiotic, active against various infections such as upper respiratory tract infections, lower respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections.
Pharmacology
Cephradine is active against both gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms and inhibits the cross-linking process in the cell wall of sensitive organisms, leading to lysis of bacteria.
Dosage and administration
- The dosage for oral administration in adults varies based on the type and severity of infection. For injectable administration, the usual dose for adults is 2-4 gm daily in four equally divided doses up to 8 gm daily.
Interactions
- Concomitant use of nephrotoxic drugs such as aminoglycosides with Cephid may increase the risk of kidney damage. Diuretics and probenecid enhance the possibility of renal toxicity.
Contraindications
Cephradine should not be used in patients with known or suspected hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.
Side effects
- Gastrointestinal disturbances

- Administer with care to patients hypersensitive to penicillins
- May cause a false positive urine glucose result
Special populations
- Dosage adjustment is necessary in renal impairment. Extra caution is advised for patients not on haemodialysis and patients on chronic, intermittent haemodialysis.

Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and gastric upsets. Treatment is mainly supportive with gastric lavage if a large amount has been ingested.
