Indications
- Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections
- Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections
- Treatment of urinary tract infections
- Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections
- Susceptible microorganisms: Staphylococci, Streptococci, E. coli, Klebsiella spp, Proteus mirabilis, Haemophilus influenza, Shigella spp, Salmonella spp, Neisseria spp
Pharmacology
- Semisynthetic broad spectrum bactericidal antibiotic
- Active against both gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
- Inhibition of cross-linking process in cell wall of bacteria
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended dosage for adults and children
- Oral administration dosage for urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, and skin infections
- Injectable administration dosage for adults and children
- Dosage adjustment for elderly and patients with impaired renal or hepatic function
Interaction
- Increased risk of kidney damage when used with nephrotoxic drugs
- Enhanced possibility of renal toxicity with diuretics and probenecid
Contraindications
- Not to be used in patients with known or suspected hypersensitivity to cephalosporins

- Rare effects including glossitis, heartburn, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, vaginitis, candida overgrowth, urticaria, skin rashes, joint pains, oedema
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safety in pregnancy not established
- Excreted in breast milk
- Caution advised in lactating mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Prolonged use may result in the development of superinfection
- Administer with care to patients hypersensitive to penicillins
- May cause false positive urine glucose result
- Dosage adjustment necessary in renal impairment
- Contains lactose, caution in patients with rare hereditary problems
Use in Special Populations
- Recommended doses for patients with renal impairment and on haemodialysis
- Higher doses may be required for chronic or severe infections
- Regular bacteriological and clinical monitoring required for chronic urinary tract infections
Overdose Effects
- Non-specific symptoms including nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea
- Supportive treatment required
