Indications

  • Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections
  • Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections
  • Treatment of urinary tract infections
  • Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections
  • Effective against Staphylococci and Streptococci
  • Effective against Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp, Proteus mirabilis, Haemophilus influenza, Shigella spp, Salmonella spp, Neisseria spp

Pharmacology

  • Broad spectrum bactericidal antibiotic
  • Active against gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
  • Inhibits cross-linking process in bacteria's cell wall
  • Causes lysis of bacteria due to external osmotic pressure

Dosage & Administration

  • Adult oral dosage for urinary tract infections: 500mg four times daily or 1g twice daily
  • Adult oral dosage for respiratory tract infections: 250 to 500mg four times daily or 500mg to 1g twice daily
  • Children oral dosage: Total daily dose of 25 to 50mg/kg given in two or four equally divided doses
  • Maximum daily dosage: 4 gm for Adults
  • Dosage adjustment necessary in renal impairment

Interaction

  • Concomitant use of nephrotoxic drugs may increase the risk of kidney damage
  • Diuretics and probenecid enhance the possibility of renal toxicity

Contraindications

  • Should not be used in patients with known or suspected hypersensitivity to cephalosporins

Precautions & Warnings

  • Prolonged use may result in the development of superinfection
  • Administered with care to patients hypersensitive to penicillins
  • May cause false positive urine glucose result

Use in Special Populations

  • Dosing recommendations for patients with renal impairment
  • Higher doses may be required for chronic or severe infections
  • Regular bacteriological and clinical monitoring required

Overdose Effects

  • Non-specific symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
  • Supportive treatment, gastric lavage if necessary

Therapeutic Class

Storage Conditions

  • Suspension should be freshly prepared
  • Reconstituted Suspension should be used within 7-14 days
  • Injection solutions to be used within 2 hours at room temperature
  • Solutions retain potency for 12 hours at 5°C
  • Medicine must be dispensed only with a registered physician's prescription
