Indications

Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections
Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections
Treatment of urinary tract infections
Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections
Effective against Staphylococci and Streptococci
Effective against Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp, Proteus mirabilis, Haemophilus influenza, Shigella spp, Salmonella spp, Neisseria spp

Pharmacology

Broad spectrum bactericidal antibiotic
Active against gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
Inhibits cross-linking process in bacteria's cell wall
Causes lysis of bacteria due to external osmotic pressure

Dosage & Administration

Adult oral dosage for urinary tract infections: 500mg four times daily or 1g twice daily
Adult oral dosage for respiratory tract infections: 250 to 500mg four times daily or 500mg to 1g twice daily
Children oral dosage: Total daily dose of 25 to 50mg/kg given in two or four equally divided doses
Maximum daily dosage: 4 gm for Adults
Dosage adjustment necessary in renal impairment

Interaction

Concomitant use of nephrotoxic drugs may increase the risk of kidney damage
Diuretics and probenecid enhance the possibility of renal toxicity

Contraindications

Should not be used in patients with known or suspected hypersensitivity to cephalosporins

Higher doses may be required for chronic or severe infections
Regular bacteriological and clinical monitoring required

Overdose Effects

Non-specific symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
Supportive treatment, gastric lavage if necessary
