Indications
- Essential hypertension

Pharmacology
- Dihydropyridine calcium-channel blocker
- Vasodilation
- Peripheral resistance reduction
- Coronary blood flow increase
- Myocardial oxygen supply increase
Dosage & Administration
- Usual dose 5 mg once daily for hypertension
- Maximum dose 10 mg once daily for hypertension
- Uses lower dose for elderly and hepatic insufficiency
- May be taken without regard to meals
Interaction
- Potentially hazardous interactions with p-blockers
- No interaction with Digoxin
- No interaction with Cimetidine
- No significant alteration with Warfarin
- Food does not alter absorption
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to dihydropyridine derivatives
- Pregnant woman

Use in Special Populations
- Dosage in children with hypertension
- Elderly tolerance
- Normal dosage for renal impairment
- Caution in hepatic impairment
- Not studied in patients under 6 years old
Overdose Effects
- Excessive peripheral vasodilatation
- Reflex tachycardia
- Marked and prolonged systemic hypotension
- Management: active cardiovascular support
- Intravenous calcium gluconate may be beneficial
- Gastric lavage may be worthwhile
- Charcoal use within 2 hours shown to reduce absorption rate
