Medicine Details

Indications

  • Treatment of infections caused by sensitive Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
  • Upper respiratory tract infections
  • Lower respiratory tract infections
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Skin and soft tissue infections

Pharmacology

  • Semisynthetic broad spectrum bactericidal antibiotic
  • Active against both gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
  • Inhibits cross-linking process in bacterial cell wall
  • Cell wall lysis due to external osmotic pressure

Dosage & Administration

  • For oral administration in adults and children
  • Dosage varies based on type and severity of infection
  • Injectable administration dosage for adults and children
  • Dosage adjustment for elderly and patients with impaired renal or hepatic function

Interaction

  • Risk of kidney damage when used concomitantly with nephrotoxic drugs such as aminoglycosides
  • Enhanced possibility of renal toxicity with diuretics and probenecid

Contraindications

  • Not to be used in patients with known or suspected hypersensitivity to cephalosporins

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Safety in pregnancy not established
  • Excreted in breast milk and should be used with caution in lactating mothers
  • May cause dizziness, caution advised for operating hazardous machinery

Precautions & Warnings

  • Prolonged use may result in superinfection
  • Administered with care to patients hypersensitive to penicillins
  • May cause a false positive urine glucose result
  • Dosage adjustment necessary in renal impairment
  • Contains lactose, caution for patients with rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance or glucose-galactose malabsorption

Use in Special Populations

  • Recommended doses for patients with renal impairment and on haemodialysis
  • Higher doses may be required for chronic or severe infections
  • Regular bacteriological and clinical monitoring required for chronic urinary tract infections

Overdose Effects

  • Non-specific symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and gastric upsets
  • Treatment is mainly supportive, gastric lavage may be necessary

Therapeutic Class

  • First generation Cephalosporins

Storage Conditions

  • Freshly prepared Suspension should be used within 7-14 days based on storage temperature
  • Injection solutions retain potency for 2-12 hours based on storage temperature
  • Do not use after the expiry date
  • Keep out of reach of children, dispensed only on prescription of a registered physician
