Indications
- Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections
- Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections
- Treatment of urinary tract infections
- Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections
- Susceptible microorganisms: Staphylococci, Streptococci, E. coli, Klebsiella spp, Proteus mirabilis, etc.
Pharmacology
- Semisynthetic broad spectrum bactericidal antibiotic
- Active against both gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
- Inhibition of bacterial cell wall cross-linking process
Dosage & Administration
- Adult oral dosage for urinary tract infections: 500mg-1g four times daily
- Adult oral dosage for respiratory tract infections: 250-500mg four times daily or 500mg-1g twice daily
- Adult oral dosage for skin and soft tissue infections: 250-500mg four times daily or 500mg-1g twice daily
- Total daily dose for children: 25-50mg/kg in divided doses
- Maximum daily dosage: 4 gm
- Elderly & impaired renal/hepatic function monitoring
Interaction
- Potential risk of kidney damage with concomitant use of nephrotoxic drugs
- Enhanced renal toxicity with diuretics and probenecid
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins
Side Effects
- Gastro-intestinal disturbances
- Hypersensitivity phenomena including skin reactions, urticaria, and rashes
- Rare effects: Glossitis, heartburn, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, vaginitis, candida overgrowth, joint pains, oedema
- Unknown: Blood disorders, fever, liver enzyme disturbances, reversible interstitial nephritis
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safety in pregnancy not established
- Excretion in breast milk, caution in lactating mothers
- Dizziness caution for patients operating hazardous machinery
Precautions & Warnings
- Prolonged use may result in superinfection
- Care with penicillin-hypersensitive patients
- Potential positive result in Coombs’ testing
- Potential false positive urine glucose result with certain test solutions
- Dosage adjustment necessary in renal impairment
- Containment of lactose, caution for patients with galactose intolerance
Use in Special Populations
- Recommended doses for renal impairment and haemodialysis
- Higher doses for chronic or severe infections
- Regular bacteriological and clinical monitoring for chronic urinary tract infections
Overdose Effects
- Non-specific symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea
- Supportive treatment, gastric lavage for large ingestions

Storage Conditions
- Reconstituted Suspension: Use within 7-14 days
- Injection solutions: Use within 2 hours at room temperature, 12 hours at 5°C
- Potency unaffected by variation in color
- Do not use after expiry date, keep out of reach of children
