Indications

  • Treatment of infections caused by sensitive Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
  • Upper respiratory tract infections
  • Lower respiratory tract infections
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Skin and soft tissue infections

Pharmacology

  • Semisynthetic broad spectrum bactericidal antibiotic
  • Active against gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
  • Inhibition of cross-linking process in bacteria cell wall
  • Bactericidal action due to cell lysis from external osmotic pressure

Dosage & Administration

  • Oral and injectable administration
  • Different doses for adults and children
  • Dosage adjustment for elderly and patients with impaired renal or hepatic function

Interaction

  • Increased risk of kidney damage with nephrotoxic drugs like aminoglycosides
  • Enhanced renal toxicity with diuretics and probenecid

Contraindications

  • Not to be used in patients with known or suspected hypersensitivity to cephalosporins

Use in Special Populations

  • Recommended doses for patients with renal impairment and on haemodialysis

  • Paediatric dosages not to exceed those specified for adults

Overdose Effects

  • Non-specific symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea
  • Supportive treatment with gastric lavage if necessary
