Indications

• Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections
• Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections
• Treatment of urinary tract infections
• Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections

Pharmacology

• Broad spectrum bactericidal antibiotic
• Active against both gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
• Inhibits cross-linking process in cell wall of bacteria

Dosage & Administration

• Recommended dosage for adults with urinary tract infections
• Recommended dosage for adults with respiratory tract infections
• Recommended dosage for adults with skin and soft tissue infections
• Total daily dose for children
• Maximum daily dosage
• Dosage for elderly and patients with impaired renal or hepatic function
• Usual dose for adults for injectable administration

Interaction

• Concomitant use with nephrotoxic drugs
• Enhanced risk of renal toxicity with diuretics and probenecid

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins

• Rare side effects including glossitis, heartburn, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, vaginitis, and candida overgrowth

• Reversible interstitial nephritis
• Elevation of blood urea nitrogen, serum creatinine, and liver enzymes

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Unknown teratogenicity in animal studies
• Excretion in breast milk
