Description
Medicef is a broad-spectrum bactericidal antibiotic indicated for the treatment of various infections caused by sensitive Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It is effective against upper and lower respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and more.

DosageInstructions
- ForOralAdministration:
- Adults:
- Urinary tract infections: 500mg four times daily or 1g twice daily
- Respiratory tract infections: 250 to 500mg four times daily
- Skin and soft tissue infections: 250 to 500mg four times daily
- Children:
- Total daily dose of 25 to 50mg/kg given in two or four equally divided doses
- Otitis media: Total daily dose of 75 to 100mg/kg given in divided doses 6 to 12 hourly
- Elderly: The normal adult dose is appropriate. Patients with impaired renal or hepatic function should be monitored during treatment.

- Adults: The usual dose is 2-4 gm daily in four equally divided doses up to 8 gm daily
- Children: The dose is 50-100 mg/kg daily in four equally divided doses, up to 300 mg/kg daily in severe infection
Indications
- Upper respiratory tract infections: sinusitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, laryngo-tracheo bronchitis, otitis media
- Lower respiratory tract infections: bronchitis, lobar pneumonia, bronchopneumonia
- Urinary tract infections: cystitis, urethritis, pyelonephritis
- Skin and soft tissue infections: abscess, cellulitis, furunculosis, impetigo
Pharmacology
Cephradine is a semisynthetic broad spectrum bactericidal antibiotic, active against both gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms. It inhibits the cross-linking process in the cell wall of bacteria, leading to lysis of bacteria due to external osmotic pressure.
Interaction
Concomitant use of nephrotoxic drugs such as aminoglycosides may increase the risk of kidney damage.
Contraindications
Cephradine should not be used in patients with known or suspected hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.

PregnancyAndLactation
Safety in pregnancy has not been established. Cephradine is excreted in breast milk and should be used with caution in lactating mothers.

- Prolonged use of an anti-infective may result in the development of superinfection
- Cephradine should be administered with care to patients hypersensitive to penicillins
- Cephalosporin antibiotics may cause a positive result in Coombs’ testing
- Medicef may cause a false positive urine glucose result
UseInSpecialPopulations
Dosage adjustment is necessary in renal impairment. Higher doses may be required for chronic or severe infections. Paediatric dosages should not exceed those specified for adults.
OverdoseEffects
Non-specific symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and gastric upsets. Treatment is mainly supportive.

StorageConditions
Medicef Suspension should be freshly prepared. Reconstituted Suspension should be used within 7 days if kept at room temperature or within 14 days if kept in a refrigerator. Injection solutions should be used within 2 hours when kept at room temperature.
