Indications
- Treatment of infections caused by sensitive Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
- Upper respiratory tract infections: sinusitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, laryngo-tracheo bronchitis, otitis media
- Lower respiratory tract infections: bronchitis, lobar pneumonia, bronchopneumonia
- Urinary tract infections: cystitis, urethritis, pyelonephritis
- Skin and soft tissue infections: abscess, cellulitis, furunculosis, impetigo
Pharmacology
- Semisynthetic broad spectrum bactericidal antibiotic
- Active against both gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
- Inhibits cross-linking process in bacterial cell wall
- Lysis of bacteria due to external osmotic pressure
Dosage & Administration
- For oral administration in adults and children
- Injectable administration for adults and children
- Dosage adjustment in renal impairment
- Maximum daily dosage: 4 gm
- Precaution for patients with impaired renal or hepatic function
Interaction
- Concomitant use of nephrotoxic drugs may increase the risk of kidney damage
- Diuretics and probenecid enhance possibility of renal toxicity
Contraindications
- Not to be used in patients with known or suspected hypersensitivity to cephalosporins
Side Effects
- Limited essentially to gastro-intestinal disturbances
- Hypersensitivity phenomena may occur
- Possible skin reactions
- Rare: glossitis, heartburn, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain
- Other rare effects on blood, immune, psychiatric, nervous, hepatobiliary, renal, and urinary systems
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safety in pregnancy not established
- Excreted in breast milk, caution in lactating mothers
- Patients cautioned about operating hazardous machinery
Precautions & Warnings
- Prolonged use may result in superinfection
- Care in administering to patients hypersensitive to penicillins
- May cause false positive urine glucose result with certain tests
- Dosage adjustment necessary in renal impairment
- Contains lactose, caution for patients with rare hereditary problems

Overdose Effects
- Non-specific symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, gastric upsets
- Treatment mainly supportive
- Gastric lavage necessary for large ingestions
