Indications

  • Treatment of Upper respiratory tract infections
  • Treatment of Lower respiratory tract infections
  • Treatment of Urinary tract infections
  • Treatment of Skin and soft tissue infections
  • Susceptible microorganisms: Staphylococci, Streptococci, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp, Proteus mirabilis
  • Gram-positive bacteria susceptibility
  • Gram-negative bacteria susceptibility

Pharmacology

  • Semisynthetic broad spectrum bactericidal antibiotic
  • Active against gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
  • Inhibits cross-linking process in bacterial cell wall
  • Cell wall lysis due to external osmotic pressure

Dosage & Administration

  • Adult dosage for urinary tract infections
  • Adult dosage for respiratory tract infections
  • Adult dosage for skin and soft tissue infections
  • Children dosage for otitis media
  • Maximum daily dosage for children
  • Dosage for elderly and patients with impaired renal or hepatic function
  • Usual injectable dosage for adults

Interaction

  • Potential risk of kidney damage with nephrotoxic drugs
  • Enhanced renal toxicity with diuretics and probenecid

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • No demonstrated teratogenicity in animal studies
  • Excretion in breast milk
  • Caution in lactating mothers
  • Potential for causing dizziness

Precautions & Warnings

  • Prolonged use may result in superinfection
  • Care with penicillin-hypersensitive patients
  • Potential positive result in Coombs’ testing
  • Possibility of false positive urine glucose result
  • Dosage adjustment in renal impairment
