Multicef 250 mg (Capsule)

Indications

• Treatment of Upper respiratory tract infections
• Treatment of Lower respiratory tract infections
• Treatment of Urinary tract infections
• Treatment of Skin and soft tissue infections
• Susceptible microorganisms: Staphylococci, Streptococci, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp, Proteus mirabilis
• Gram-positive bacteria susceptibility
• Gram-negative bacteria susceptibility

Pharmacology

• Semisynthetic broad spectrum bactericidal antibiotic
• Active against gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
• Inhibits cross-linking process in bacterial cell wall
• Cell wall lysis due to external osmotic pressure

Dosage & Administration

• Adult dosage for urinary tract infections
• Adult dosage for respiratory tract infections
• Adult dosage for skin and soft tissue infections
• Children dosage for otitis media
• Maximum daily dosage for children
• Dosage for elderly and patients with impaired renal or hepatic function
• Usual injectable dosage for adults
• Usual injectable dosage for children

Interaction

• Potential risk of kidney damage with nephrotoxic drugs
• Enhanced renal toxicity with diuretics and probenecid

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins

• Gastrointestinal disturbances
• Hypersensitivity phenomena
• Skin reactions
• Rare side effects: Glossitis, heartburn, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, vaginitis, candida overgrowth
• Rare hematologic and immune system disorders
• Rare psychiatric and nervous system disorders
• Rare hepatobiliary and renal disorders

Pregnancy & Lactation

• No demonstrated teratogenicity in animal studies
• Excretion in breast milk
• Caution in lactating mothers
• Potential for causing dizziness

Precautions & Warnings

• Prolonged use may result in superinfection
• Care with penicillin-hypersensitive patients
• Potential positive result in Coombs’ testing
• Possibility of false positive urine glucose result
• Dosage adjustment in renal impairment
• Contains lactose

Use in Special Populations

• Recommended doses for patients not on haemodialysis
• Recommended doses for patients on chronic, intermittent haemodialysis
• Need for regular bacteriological and clinical monitoring
• Special considerations for paediatric dosages

Overdose Effects

• Non-specific symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, gastric upsets
• Supportive treatment
• Gastric lavage for large ingestions
