Medicine Details

Indications

  • Treatment of infections caused by sensitive Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
  • Upper respiratory tract infections: sinusitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, laryngo-tracheo bronchitis, otitis media
  • Lower respiratory tract infections: bronchitis, lobar pneumonia, bronchopneumonia
  • Urinary tract infections: cystitis, urethritis, pyelonephritis
  • Skin and soft tissue infections: abscess, cellulitis, furunculosis, impetigo
  • Susceptible microorganisms: Staphylococci, Streptococci, Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus pneumonia, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp, Proteus mirabilis, Haemophilus influenza, Shigella spp, Salmonella spp, Neisseria spp

Pharmacology

  • Semisynthetic broad spectrum bactericidal antibiotic
  • Active against both gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
  • Inhibition of cross-linking process in the cell wall of bacteria

Dosage & Administration

  • For oral administration:
    • Dosage for adults with urinary tract infections
    • Dosage for adults with respiratory tract infections
    • Dosage for adults with skin and soft tissue infections
    • Dosage for children with urinary tract infections
    • Dosage for children with otitis media
    • Maximum daily dosage for children: 4 gm
    • Elderly dosage consideration
    • For injectable administration dosage for adults
    • Dosage for children with injectable administration

Interaction

  • Concomitant use of nephrotoxic drugs
  • Enhanced risk of kidney damage with diuretics and probenecid

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins

  • Rare effects: Glossitis, heartburn, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, vaginitis, candida overgrowth

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • No demonstrated teratogenicity in animal studies
  • Excretion in breast milk
  • Caution in lactating mothers
  • Caution about operating hazardous machinery

Precautions & Warnings

  • Prolonged use may result in superinfection
  • Administration with care to patients hypersensitive to penicillins
  • Potential positive result in Coombs’ testing
  • Potential false positive urine glucose result with certain tests
  • Dosage adjustment in renal impairment
  • Contains lactose, caution for patients with specific problems

Overdose Effects
