Description
- P-Cef DS is a semisynthetic broad-spectrum bactericidal antibiotic
- Active against infections caused by both gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
- Indicated for upper and lower respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections
- Contains Cephradine as the active ingredient
DosageAndAdministration
- Oral and injectable administration available
- Adult dosage for urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections
- Children dosage for otitis media, maximum daily dosage
- Elderly and patients with impaired renal or hepatic function monitoring required
Indications
- Treatment of infections caused by sensitive Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
- Specifically for upper respiratory tract infections, lower respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections
- Susceptible microorganisms include Staphylococci, Streptococci, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp, Proteus mirabilis, Haemophilus influenza, Shigella spp, Salmonella spp, Neisseria spp
ModeOfAction
- Cephradine inhibits cross-linking process in the cell wall of bacteria leading to lysis
Interaction
- Concomitant use of nephrotoxic drugs may increase the risk of kidney damage
- Diuretics and probenecid enhance the possibility of renal toxicity
Contraindications
- Not to be used in patients with known or suspected hypersensitivity to cephalosporins

- Cephalosporin antibiotics may cause a positive result in Coombs' testing
- May cause a false positive urine glucose result with certain tests
- Dosage adjustment necessary in renal impairment
- Contains lactose, not suitable for patients with specific hereditary problems

- Recommended doses for patients with renal impairment and on haemodialysis
- Higher doses may be required for chronic or severe infections
- Regular bacteriological and clinical monitoring required for chronic urinary tract infections
- Paediatric dosages should not exceed those specified for adults
OverdoseEffects
- Non-specific symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and gastric upsets
- Supportive treatment required, gastric lavage in case of large ingestion
