Indications

  • Upper respiratory tract infections
  • Lower respiratory tract infections
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • Gram-positive microorganisms
  • Gram-negative microorganisms

Pharmacology

  • Semisynthetic broad spectrum bactericidal antibiotic
  • Active against gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
  • Inhibition of cell wall formation

Dosage & Administration

  • For oral administration - Adults:
    • Urinary tract infections
    • Respiratory tract infections
    • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • For oral administration - Children:
    • Total daily dose
    • Otitis media
    • Maximum daily dosage
  • For injectable administration - Adult:
    • Usual dose
    • Prophylaxis
  • For injectable administration - Children:
    • Dose in severe infection

Interaction

  • Nephrotoxic drugs: Increased risk of kidney damage
  • Diuretics and probenecid: Enhanced possibility of renal toxicity

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins

Side Effects

  • Gastro-intestinal disturbances: Limited essentially
  • Hypersensitivity phenomena: More likely in individuals with history of allergy, asthma, hay fever or urticaria
  • Rare reactions:
    • Glossitis
    • Heartburn
    • Dizziness
    • Nausea
    • Vomiting
    • Diarrhoea
    • Abdominal pain
    • Vaginitis
    • Candida overgrowth

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Excretion in breast milk
  • Caution in lactating mothers

Precautions & Warnings

  • Superinfection: Prolonged use may result in development
  • Cross-sensitivity: Risk to patients hypersensitive to penicillins
  • Coombs’ testing: May cause a positive result
  • Urine glucose result: May cause a false positive result
  • Renal impairment: Dosage adjustment necessary
  • Lactose content: Contains lactose

Use in Special Populations

  • Renal Impairment: Recommended doses for patients not on haemodialysis
  • Additional Information:
    • Higher doses for chronic or severe infections
    • Continued treatment for at least 2 to 3 days after symptoms have resolved
    • Regular monitoring for chronic urinary tract infections
