Description

  • Polycef is a broad-spectrum bactericidal antibiotic used to treat infections caused by sensitive Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It is indicated for upper respiratory tract infections, lower respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections.

Mode of Action

  • Inhibits cross-linking process in the cell wall of bacteria, leading to lysis of bacteria due to external osmotic pressure

Dosage Form

  • Oral

Dosage Instructions

  • Adults: 500mg-1g four times daily or 1g twice daily, Children: 25-50mg/kg daily in divided doses
  • Maximum daily dosage: 4 gm
  • Elderly: Normal adult dose is appropriate

Interaction

  • Concomitant use with nephrotoxic drugs may increase risk of kidney damage
  • Diuretics and probenecid enhance possibility of renal toxicity

Contraindications

  • Known or suspected hypersensitivity to cephalosporins
