Indications

  • Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections

Pharmacology

  • Semisynthetic broad spectrum bactericidal antibiotic
  • Main site of action is the cell wall of bacteria
  • Inhibits cross-linking process of bacterial cell wall

Dosage & Administration

  • Oral administration for adults and children
  • Dosage adjustment for elderly, renal impairment
  • Injectable administration for adults and children
  • Maximum daily dosage is 4 gm

Interaction

  • Concomitant use of nephrotoxic drugs may increase risk of kidney damage
  • Diuretics and probenecid enhance possibility of renal toxicity

Contraindications

  • Should not be used in patients with known or suspected hypersensitivity to cephalosporins

  • Cephalosporins may cause a positive result in Coombs' testing
  • May cause false positive urine glucose result with certain tests
  • Dosage adjustment necessary in renal impairment
  • Contains lactose; caution in patients with rare hereditary problems

Use in Special Populations

  • Renal Impairment dosing recommendations for different levels of creatinine clearance
  • Higher doses may be required for chronic or severe infections
  • Regular bacteriological and clinical monitoring required

Overdose Effects

  • Non-specific symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and gastric upsets
