Indications
- Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections
- Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections
- Treatment of urinary tract infections
- Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections
- Active against gram-positive bacteria
- Active against gram-negative bacteria
Pharmacology
- Semisynthetic broad spectrum bactericidal antibiotic
- Main site of action is the cell wall of bacteria
- Inhibits cross-linking process of bacterial cell wall
Dosage & Administration
- Oral administration for adults and children
- Dosage adjustment for elderly, renal impairment
- Injectable administration for adults and children
- Maximum daily dosage is 4 gm
Interaction
- Concomitant use of nephrotoxic drugs may increase risk of kidney damage
- Diuretics and probenecid enhance possibility of renal toxicity
Contraindications
- Should not be used in patients with known or suspected hypersensitivity to cephalosporins

Precautions & Warnings
- Prolonged use may result in development of superinfection
- Caution in patients hypersensitive to penicillins
- Cephalosporins may cause a positive result in Coombs' testing
- May cause false positive urine glucose result with certain tests
- Dosage adjustment necessary in renal impairment
- Contains lactose; caution in patients with rare hereditary problems
Use in Special Populations
- Renal Impairment dosing recommendations for different levels of creatinine clearance
- Higher doses may be required for chronic or severe infections
- Regular bacteriological and clinical monitoring required
Overdose Effects
- Non-specific symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and gastric upsets

- Freshly prepare suspension
- Reconstituted Suspension should be used within 7-14 days
- Injection solutions should be used within 2 hours or 12 hours when stored at 5°C
