Indications

  • Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections
  • Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections
  • Treatment of urinary tract infections
  • Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections
  • Susceptible microorganisms: Staphylococci, Streptococci, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp, Proteus mirabilis, Haemophilus influenza, Shigella spp, Salmonella spp, Neisseria spp
  • Therapeutic Class: First generation Cephalosporins

Pharmacology

  • Semisynthetic broad spectrum bactericidal antibiotic
  • Active against gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
  • Inhibits cross-linking process in cell wall of bacteria
  • Main action site: Bacterial cell wall

Dosage & Administration

  • Oral administration for adults: Varying doses based on infection type and severity
  • Oral administration for children: Total daily dose based on weight and infection type
  • Injectable administration for adults: Usual dose and prophylaxis dose
  • Injectable administration for children: Dose based on weight and severity of infection
  • Dosage adjustment necessary in renal impairment
  • Maximum daily dosage: 4 gm

Interaction

  • Concomitant use of nephrotoxic drugs may increase risk of kidney damage
  • Diuretics and probenecid enhance possibility of renal toxicity

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins

Precautions & Warnings

  • Prolonged use may result in superinfection
  • Careful administration to patients hypersensitive to penicillins
  • Cephalosporin antibiotics may cause a positive result in Coombs’ testing
  • May cause a false positive urine glucose result
  • Contains lactose
  • Dosage adjustment necessary in renal impairment

Use in Special Populations

  • Recommended doses for patients with renal impairment
  • Higher doses may be required for chronic or severe infections
  • Monitoring required for chronic urinary tract infections
  • Paediatric dosages should not exceed those specified for adults
  • Regular bacteriological and clinical monitoring required

Overdose Effects

  • Non-specific symptoms: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, gastric upsets
  • Treatment is mainly supportive
  • Gastric lavage necessary in case of large ingestion

Storage Conditions

  • Freshly prepared suspension
  • Reconstituted suspension should be used within specified timeframes
  • Injection solutions should be used within specified timeframes
  • Solutions retain potency for 12 hours when stored at 5°C
  • Variation in color does not affect potency
  • Keep all medicines out of the reach of children
