Indications
- Treatment of infections caused by sensitive Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
- Upper respiratory tract infections
- Lower respiratory tract infections
- Urinary tract infections
- Skin and soft tissue infections
Pharmacology
- Semisynthetic broad spectrum bactericidal antibiotic
- Active against both gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
- Main site of action is the cell wall of bacteria
- Inhibits cross-linking process in cell wall
Dosage & Administration
- For oral administration - Adults:
- Urinary tract infections
- Respiratory tract infections
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- For oral administration - Children:
- Total daily dose of 25 to 50mg/kg
- Otitis media
- Maximum daily dosage: 4 gm
- For injectable administration - Adult:
- Usual dose is 2-4 gm daily
- Single preoperative dose of 1-2 gm for prophylaxis
- For injectable administration - Children:
- Dose is 50-100 mg/kg daily
- Up to 300 mg/kg daily in severe infection
Interaction
- Concomitant use with nephrotoxic drugs may increase risk of kidney damage
- Diuretics and probenecid enhance possibility of renal toxicity
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins
Side Effects
- Limited essentially to gastro-intestinal disturbances
- Hypersensitivity phenomena
- Glossitis
- Heartburn
- Skin reactions
- Fever
- Anaphylaxis
- Liver enzyme disturbances
- Reversible interstitial nephritis
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safety in pregnancy not established
- Excreted in breast milk
- Caution in lactating mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Prolonged use may result in development of superinfection
- Administer with care to patients hypersensitive to penicillins
- May cause false positive urine glucose result
- Dosage adjustment necessary in renal impairment
- Contains lactose, caution in patients with rare hereditary problems
Use in Special Populations
- Recommended doses for patients with renal impairment and on haemodialysis
- Higher doses may be required for chronic or severe infections
Overdose Effects
- Non-specific symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea
- Supportive treatment
- Gastric lavage if necessary

Storage Conditions
- Suspension should be freshly prepared
- Reconstituted Suspension should be used within 7-14 days
- Injection solutions should be used within 2 hours at room temperature
- Retains potency for 12 hours at 5°C
- Variation in color does not affect potency
- Do not use later than the date of expiry
- Keep out of reach of children
- To be dispensed only on prescription of a registered physician
