Indications
- Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections
- Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections
- Treatment of urinary tract infections
- Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections
- Effective against gram-positive bacteria
- Effective against gram-negative bacteria
Pharmacology
- Semisynthetic broad spectrum bactericidal antibiotic
- Active against both gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
- Inhibits cross-linking process in bacterial cell wall
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage for urinary tract infections: 500mg four times daily or 1g twice daily
- Children dosage for otitis media: Total daily dose of 75 to 100mg/kg
- Maximum daily dosage: 4 gm
- Usual adult dose for injectable administration: 2-4 gm daily in four equally divided doses
Interaction
- Increased risk of kidney damage when used with nephrotoxic drugs
- Enhanced renal toxicity when used with diuretics and probenecid
Contraindications
- Not to be used in patients with known or suspected hypersensitivity to cephalosporins

Precautions & Warnings
- Prolonged use may result in superinfection
- Administered with care to patients hypersensitive to penicillins
- May cause a false positive urine glucose result
- Dosage adjustment necessary in renal impairment
Use in Special Populations
- Recommended doses for patients with renal impairment
- Additional information for all patients irrespective of age or weight
- Higher doses may be required for chronic or severe infections
- Regular bacteriological and clinical monitoring required in chronic urinary tract infections
Overdose Effects
- Non-specific symptoms include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
- Supportive treatment recommended

Storage Conditions
- Sefnin Suspension should be freshly prepared
- Reconstituted suspension should be used within 7 days at room temperature
- Reconstituted injection solutions should be used within 2 hours at room temperature
