Indications

  • Treatment of infections caused by sensitive Gram-positive bacteria
  • Treatment of infections caused by sensitive Gram-negative bacteria
  • Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections
  • Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections
  • Treatment of urinary tract infections
  • Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections

Pharmacology

  • Semisynthetic broad spectrum bactericidal antibiotic
  • Active against both gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
  • Inhibits cross-linking process in the cell wall of bacteria

Dosage & Administration

  • Oral administration for adults and children
  • Injectable administration for adults and children
  • Dosage adjustment for elderly patients and those with impaired renal or hepatic function
  • Maximum daily dosage of 4 gm for children

Interaction

  • Increased risk of kidney damage when used with nephrotoxic drugs such as aminoglycosides
  • Enhanced possibility of renal toxicity when used with diuretics and probenecid

Contraindications

  • Not to be used in patients with known or suspected hypersensitivity to cephalosporins

Precautions & Warnings

  • Development of superinfection with prolonged use
  • Administer with care to patients hypersensitive to penicillins
  • Positive result in Coombs’ testing
  • May cause a false positive urine glucose result
  • Dosage adjustment necessary in renal impairment
  • Contains lactose

Use in Special Populations

  • Recommended doses for patients with renal impairment and on haemodialysis
  • Higher doses may be required for chronic or severe infections
  • Regular monitoring required for chronic urinary tract infections

Overdose Effects

  • Non-specific symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea

Storage Conditions

  • Freshly prepare suspension
  • Use reconstituted suspension within 7 days if kept at room temperature
  • Use reconstituted suspension within 14 days if kept in a refrigerator
  • Use injection solutions within 2 hours when kept at room temperature
  • Retain potency for 12 hours when stored at 5°C
  • Dispense only on the prescription of a registered physician
